We have used Semrush Pro and Guru plans across multiple client campaigns over the past 3 years. For this review we specifically tested the AI features added in 2025–2026, compared keyword research output against Ahrefs and Moz on 50 target keywords, and evaluated the site audit tool against a real 200-page WordPress site. We did not receive payment or free access from Semrush for this review. Last updated May 2026.
01 What is Semrush and what does it do?
Semrush is an all-in-one digital marketing platform used by over 10 million marketers worldwide. At its core it is an SEO tool — but describing it that way undersells its scope. Semrush covers keyword research, competitor analysis, backlink auditing, rank tracking, site technical auditing, content marketing, PPC research, social media management, and local SEO in a single platform.
For small businesses, the most valuable tools are keyword research (finding what your customers search for), competitor gap analysis (finding keywords your competitors rank for that you don't), backlink analysis (understanding who links to you and your competitors), and the site audit (identifying technical SEO issues holding your rankings back).
Semrush database as of 2026: 26.4 billion keywords, 43 trillion backlinks, 500 million domains tracked.
02 Semrush pricing 2026 — what each plan includes
Semrush has three main plans plus a free limited account. Here is exactly what you get at each tier and who each plan is designed for.
| Plan | Monthly price | Annual price | Projects | Keywords tracked | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Free | $0 | $0 | 1 | 10 | Testing the tool |
| Pro | $139.95 | $117.33/mo | 5 | 500 | Freelancers, small sites |
| Guru | $249.95 | $208.33/mo | 15 | 1,500 | Growing businesses, agencies |
| Business | $499.95 | $416.66/mo | 40 | 5,000 | Large agencies, enterprises |
💡 Which Semrush plan should a small business choose?
For most small businesses, Semrush Pro is the right starting point. It gives you 5 projects (one per website or domain you manage), 500 keywords to track, and access to all the core research tools. If you manage multiple client websites or need historical data and content tools, upgrade to Guru. The annual billing saves approximately 17% vs monthly.
Semrush free trial — what you get
Semrush offers a 7-day free trial of the Pro plan with a credit card required. During the trial you get full access to all Pro features — keyword research, site audit, rank tracking, backlink analysis, and competitor research with no limits. It is one of the most generous free trials in the SEO tool market. Cancel before day 7 and you are not charged.
03 Keyword research — our hands-on review
Semrush's Keyword Magic Tool is the best keyword research tool available in 2026. Enter any seed keyword and it returns thousands of related keywords with search volume, keyword difficulty (KD), CPC, and search intent classification (informational, commercial, navigational, transactional). The intent classification is particularly valuable — it tells you at a glance whether a keyword is a research query (write a blog post) or a buying query (create a service page).
✅ Our take on Semrush keyword research
We compared Semrush keyword data against Ahrefs and Google Search Console on 50 target keywords across our client portfolio. Semrush search volume estimates were within 15–25% of actual Google Search Console impressions on average — comparable to Ahrefs and significantly better than Moz. The intent classification feature is genuinely useful and saves hours of manual assessment on large keyword lists.
04 Competitor analysis — find the gaps your competitors left open
The Keyword Gap tool is one of Semrush's most powerful features for small businesses. You enter your domain alongside 2–4 competitors and Semrush shows you every keyword your competitors rank for that you don't. It's the fastest way to find your most valuable content opportunities — keywords that are already proven to drive traffic for similar businesses, that you haven't yet targeted.
- Domain Overview — see any site's estimated organic traffic, top keywords, and backlink profile instantly
- Keyword Gap — compare your keyword profile against up to 4 competitors simultaneously
- Traffic Analytics — estimate competitor traffic, traffic sources, and audience demographics
- Organic Research — see every keyword a domain ranks for, sorted by position and traffic contribution
05 Site Audit — find and fix technical SEO issues
Semrush's Site Audit crawls your website and checks it against 140+ technical SEO factors — broken links, missing meta descriptions, duplicate content, Core Web Vitals issues, schema markup errors, HTTPS problems, crawl depth issues, and more. Every issue is categorised as an error (fix immediately), warning (fix soon), or notice (optional improvement). The prioritised action list is one of the most practical outputs in any SEO tool — it tells you what to fix first based on impact.
🔧 What we found on our test audit
We ran the Site Audit against a 200-page WordPress site. Semrush identified 47 errors and 112 warnings in under 20 minutes — including 3 Core Web Vitals failures, 12 pages with duplicate meta descriptions, and 8 broken internal links that Google Search Console had not flagged. The fix recommendations were specific and accurate in every case we verified.
06 Backlink analysis — 43 trillion links indexed
Semrush's backlink database contains 43 trillion backlinks — second only to Ahrefs in size. The Backlink Analytics tool shows you every site linking to any domain, their Authority Score (Semrush's equivalent of domain authority), anchor text distribution, and link type (dofollow/nofollow). The Backlink Audit tool specifically identifies potentially toxic links that could be triggering a Google penalty — and generates a disavow file in one click.
07 Rank tracking — daily position monitoring
Semrush's Position Tracking updates keyword rankings daily for all tracked keywords. You can track rankings by country, city, or zip/postal code — making it one of the best local SEO tracking tools available. It also tracks SERP feature presence — whether you appear in featured snippets, local packs, image carousels, and more. Rank changes are visualised clearly with trend graphs and email alerts when significant position changes occur.
08 Semrush AI features 2025–2026
Semrush added significant AI capabilities in 2025 and 2026. Here is what is genuinely useful versus what is still early-stage.

09 Semrush vs Ahrefs — the comparison everyone searches for
Semrush and Ahrefs are the two most powerful SEO tool suites available. Here is our honest comparison after using both professionally.
- Better keyword research database (26.4B keywords)
- More complete all-in-one platform (PPC, social, content)
- Better site audit tool (140+ checks)
- Better local SEO tools
- AI Copilot dashboard — no Ahrefs equivalent
- Backlink database slightly smaller than Ahrefs
- More expensive at equivalent tiers
- Larger backlink database (most comprehensive available)
- Better backlink quality metrics
- Site Explorer UI slightly more intuitive
- No credit card required for free Webmaster Tools
- No PPC or social media tools
- Weaker site audit vs Semrush
- No free trial on paid plans (credits-based only)
💡 Semrush vs Ahrefs — our verdict
If SEO is your primary use case and you mainly care about backlink research, Ahrefs has a slight edge on link data quality. If you want a complete digital marketing suite — SEO, PPC research, content, social, and local — Semrush is the better all-round investment. For small businesses new to SEO tools, Semrush's interface and onboarding is more accessible. Most professional SEOs use both, but if you can only afford one, Semrush covers more ground.
